Travel to Tokyo, a city that is always on the move

Tokyo is a huge and bustling tourist destination that attracts visitors from all over the world who want to experience the sights and sounds of Japan’s capital city. Ranked first for “Best Overall Experience” by TripAdvisor in 2014, Tokyo offers a wealth of attractions whatever you enjoy doing. When you visit Tokyo you can be assured of a friendly welcome as well as excellent nightlife and retail experiences, and, on the historical side of things there are also some great opportunities to step back in time.

There’s no doubt that Tokyo is a very modern city. Just take a look around at all the bright lights and the transportation, and the people and the businesses who call the city home, and it’s easy to see this modern side. Tokyo may be busy but it’s an extremely clean city so it’s a pleasure to walk around and it’s obvious that this is a place that’s well taken care of.

Japan’s capital is home to more Fortune Global 500 companies than anywhere else in the world and it also features highly on the Global Economic Power Index. Although commonly referred to as a city, it’s actually a metropolitan prefecture. This means that it combines the qualities of a city with those of a Japanese prefecture, and Tokyo is the only place in Japan to which this applies. As you might expect from the capital of a country, Tokyo is home to the Emperor of Japan as well as the government.

Located on Honshu, the main island in Japan, the original name for Tokyo was Edo and this was only changed when it became the capital of the country in 1868.

One of the most famous attributes of Tokyo is its pop culture. If you want to see the latest looks and trends that are about to “pop” it’s worth taking a trip to Harajuku. For anime and manga fans the place to be is Akihabara. There is pop culture everywhere and it’s easy to become immersed in all of its wonderful quirkiness.

Despite its modern appearances you can still get a glimpse into Tokyo’s past, even amidst the skyscraper landscape. Visit Tokyo today and there are several old wooden bars and cobbled streets where you can stop and shop for traditional mementos of your visit. This contrast is part of what makes Tokyo such a fascinating place to visit. It’s a fast moving modern metropolis that hasn’t forgotten its past.

Tokyo is also a great place to eat out, whether it’s in a Michelin starred restaurant, or from a street vendor. No matter where you choose to get your food you can be sure it will be prepared with the same dedication to quality. Whatever your choice of menu, your taste buds will be delighted when you visit Tokyo!

Probably the most familiar view of Tokyo that comes to mind is the sleek and elegant skyscrapers that blaze against the darkness of the sky at night. The population of Tokyo is vast and the only way to accommodate this is to build up. It’s a magical mosaic of skyscrapers and if you go to the top of one of these during your visit you can look out across the awesome landscape of Tokyo. You can see the huge malls and the spire of the Tokyo Sky Tree.
